Lactic acid is the gentlest AHA in its family. As a chemical exfoliant, it separates corneocytes (dead cells) from each other and stimulates cell renewal. But it has a valuable peculiarity: it is also a natural humectant, present in the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF), and attracts water to the superficial layers of the epidermis while exfoliating.
